Lesson 1: Make sure there is no long-term control group.
If you’re looking at infants, make sure your product is given to EVERY SINGLE ONE AT BIRTH.
There will be no infants who did NOT get your product to serve as a comparison down the road to those who did.

If you’re looking at adults, you have a couple of choices.
A) You could give the “placebo” group the ingredient from your product that is most likely to trigger an unwanted reaction.
Just make sure to list it as “placebo” on all your study reports that you submit to the FDA. (And shame on the FDA for failing to see that trick and approving the product.)
QUIZ QUESTION #2: which product or products fit this model?
B) You could give the placebo group a perfectly harmless saline placebo — and that IS the gold-standard of the placebo-controlled trial — but then make sure to offer members of the placebo group the product (which has been aggressively marketed as a life-saving necessity) as soon as possible after the initial results of the trial are announced.
